<span class="stage">INT. SMALL ROOM — NIGHT</span>
It's a room too plain to trust.
Four chairs. One table. A single bare bulb. No windows visible. No door visible either, though you remember entering through one.
You stand with the others in a loose half-circle.
At the table sits <span class="ministry">THE MESSAGE</span>, dressed cleanly, hands folded, face covered by a smooth pale mask. A notebook lies open before them but they do not look down at it.
<span class="ministry">THE MESSAGE</span>
Words are too honest.
A beat, a long pause, a drawn out moment.
<span class="ministry">THE MESSAGE</span>
You will speak in directions.
No one answers at first.
Then, breaking the silence, someone laughs once, just once, but it's too quietly to survive the room.
The Message turns their mask toward you.
<span class="ministry">THE MESSAGE</span>
No dialogue. No pleading. No explanations.
Only what the scene can use.
The bulb hums and the sound of electricity is potent and overwhelming for a moment, then subsides. Something wrong with the bulb.
<span class="ministry">THE MESSAGE</span>
Begin.
You feel the room waiting for you to make the first mistake.
[[I say nothing.->Say Nothing]]
[[I step back.->Step Back]]
[[I look for the door.->Look Door]]
[[I decide this is a trick.->Trick]](set: $compliance to it + 1)
The Message writes something down.
<span class="ministry">THE MESSAGE</span>
Silence is acceptable.
Silence is never empty.
One of the others shifts beside you nervously and then takes a step forward.
<span class="stage">OTHER CAST</span>
I don’t—
The Message raises one hand and a STAGEHAND, who was not there a moment ago, steps from the dark edge of the room. They definitely weren't there but a second ago.
They place one finger against the speaker’s lips. Lightly, just enough to indicate the meaning, to give the point and let them have it, that makes it worse.
<span class="ministry">THE MESSAGE</span>
Incorrect.
The Stagehand steps back. Not into the darkness, not disappears, but steps back. It's not their time in the scene.
<span class="ministry">THE MESSAGE</span>
Try again.
The other cast member swallows hard.
<span class="stage">OTHER CAST</span>
[I regret speaking.]
The Message nods gladly.
<span class="ministry">THE MESSAGE</span>
Better.
[[The rules settle.->Rules Settle]](set: $resistance to it + 1)
You step back.
The Message watches the motion like it belongs to them.
<span class="ministry">THE MESSAGE</span>
Good.
Movement admits what speech conceals.
One of the others turns toward you and directs, states and sets in motion at once.
<span class="stage">OTHER CAST </span>
[They abandon us.]
The words land fast enough that you want to deny it, you want to explain, but...but.
But the rules are already inside the room.
[[The rules settle.->Rules Settle]](set: $resistance to it + 1)
(set: $trust to it - 1)
Your eyes move along the walls and there isn't a door. There must have been a door before, right?
There must have been.
<span class="ministry">THE MESSAGE</span>
Excellent.
The Message makes one careful mark in the notebook, with a slight flourish, things get dramatic.
<span class="ministry">THE MESSAGE</span>
A character seeks exit before meaning.
Useful.
One of the others whispers, they're remembering the rule too late:
<span class="stage">OTHER CAST</span>
[They would leave first.]
The room accepts this.
You feel it become something other people can use. Use against each other. Use to shape and use to harm.
Aren't you being used?
[[The rules settle.->Rules Settle]](set: $resistance to it + 1)
(set: $trust to it - 1)
The thought slides into your posture and suddenly the posture becomes evidence. Tried and found guilty in one shift.
<span class="ministry">THE MESSAGE</span>
A mind defending itself.
Predictable. Not useless.
The Message turns a page in the notebook, it's blank.
<span class="ministry">THE MESSAGE</span>
Now make it visible.
You force yourself to speak in the only permitted language, you take your speaking and stage it before all to witness:
<span class="stage">YOU</span>
[I do not trust the room.]
The Message tilts their head inquisitively.
<span class="ministry">THE MESSAGE</span>
The room does not require trust.
[[The rules settle.->Rules Settle]]<span class="stage">INT. SMALL ROOM — LATER</span>
The rules have settled and everyone speaks like they are describing themselves from far away.
<span class="stage">CAST TWO</span>
[I fold my hands so no one sees them shake.]
<span class="stage">CAST THREE</span>
[I watch the weakest person.]
<span class="stage">CAST FOUR</span>
[I smile like I mean it.]
The Message listens as the Stagehand circles slowly. They're correcting posture, moving chairs by inches, turning bodies toward each other like props on a set. Proper props, all too swiftly.
You understand the shape of the ritual now.
No one is allowed to say what they feel. They can only become observable, and they can only be witnessed in a way that uses.
The Message shuts the notebook, and the sound is small and final.
<span class="ministry">THE MESSAGE</span>
Now.
Each of you will direct someone else.
No one moves.
<span class="ministry">THE MESSAGE</span>
A person is difficult.
A role is simple.
They point to Cast Member Two.
<span class="ministry">THE MESSAGE</span>
Begin with them.
Cast Two looks at you as their face asks forgiveness but their voice gives direction.
<span class="stage">CAST TWO</span>
[You step forward.]
You do as you're told.
Or maybe you don’t.
Either answer is part of the scene.
[[I step forward.->Forward]]
[[I remain still.->Still]]
[[I make them say it again.->Again]]
[[I direct someone else instead.->Deflect]](set: $compliance to it + 2)
You step forward as the Message makes another mark, records, witnesses into the record.
<span class="ministry">THE MESSAGE</span>
Compliant movement.
Fear disguised as cooperation.
Two looks away, ashamed but lighter than before.
<span class="stage">CAST TWO</span>
[I am relieved they obeyed.]
Their relief sounds worse than the command did, their relief is giving in to the ritual.
[[The final beat arrives.->Final Beat]](set: $resistance to it + 2)
You remain still as the room tightens, you remain still and the room tightens, both.
The Stagehand moves closer to you.
<span class="ministry">THE MESSAGE</span>
Resistance.
A beat.
<span class="ministry">THE MESSAGE</span>
Not freedom.
Resistance is only another direction.
The Message points to the others, brought into the scene, vulnerable, vulnerable like a bruise, like a seed, something to carry and make something of.
<span class="ministry">THE MESSAGE</span>
Correct them.
One by one, they speak as they are directed, as they inevitably would.
<span class="stage">CAST THREE</span>
[You should have moved.]
<span class="stage">CAST FOUR</span>
[You made this harder.]
<span class="stage">CAST TWO</span>
[I wish I had chosen someone else.]
The words don't strike you, instead they arrange you.
[[The final beat arrives.->Final Beat]](set: $cruelty to it + 2)
You look at Cast Member Two as you wait.
They understand. It's terrible to understand, isn't it?
<span class="stage">CAST TWO</span>
[You step forward.]
You wait longer and their voice cracks weakly.
<span class="stage">CAST TWO</span>
[Please.]
The Message’s hand rises as the room stops. The show stops.
<span class="ministry">THE MESSAGE</span>
No.
The Stagehand steps behind CAST Two.
<span class="ministry">THE MESSAGE</span>
That was dialogue.
The Message looks at you.
<span class="ministry">THE MESSAGE</span>
You made them beg.
Repeat your line.
You know which line they mean before they say it.
<span class="ministry">THE MESSAGE</span>
Say:
[I wanted that.]

<span class="stage">YOU</span>
[I wanted that.]
The room doesn't gasp nor cheer nor laugh, the room isn't those rooms, this room, the room records.
<span class="ministry">THE MESSAGE</span>
A clean line.
Not a clean person.
[[The final beat arrives.->Final Beat]](set: $resistance to it + 1)
You don't say it.
The Message lacks surprise, but you lack being surprised by that. After all:
<span class="ministry">THE MESSAGE</span>
Your silence says it for you.
Two looks even worse for the wear than before.
[[The final beat arrives.->Final Beat]](set: $cruelty to it + 1)
(set: $resistance to it + 1)
You turn away from Two and point to Three, point demanding, demanding and commanding the shape of things is the point.
<span class="stage">YOU</span>
[You confess first.]
Cast Three’s eyes harden and there's an admirable glint of resistance in them.
The Message is still.
Then they laugh once with recognition. Like they've seen this episode before. Comfort shows.
<span class="ministry">THE MESSAGE</span>
A deflection with teeth.
They write it down and speak it true.
<span class="ministry">THE MESSAGE</span>
Good television.
The Stagehand moves behind you, almost approving, almost.
[[The final beat arrives.->Final Beat]]<span class="stage">INT. SMALL ROOM — FINAL BEAT</span>
The bulb flickers harsh and sudden and --
The Message stands for the first time.
A hush falls. Everyone is quiet now. Not because they have nothing to say.
But because the language has taken something from them.
<span class="ministry">THE MESSAGE</span>
We have enough.
They walk the half-circle slowly and move with the confidence of an executioner as one hand trails across the backs of the chairs.
<span class="ministry">THE MESSAGE</span>
One of you has an ending.
They stop in front of you. Or maybe they always meant to, maybe that's what was written, what you were cast for.
<span class="ministry">THE MESSAGE</span>
You.
The Message turns to the group.
<span class="ministry">THE MESSAGE</span>

You will agree.

A pause, a beat.
That's the sound of a certain sort of question, wherein the question is not asking for truth.
It's asking for surrender before something greater, to something greater.

[[It is not true.->Not True]]

For a moment, it seems like that might matter. Like this place and this time could be so kind, you know you tell yourself a joke by hoping.
Then the Stagehand steps behind the group and speaks for the first time.
